What the grinder settings really mean

I've had this grinder for a couple years, and I use it at least weekly. No major problems. Just two main issues:

1) I use a french press, so I like my grinds as coarse as possible. But even on the coarsest setting, there is always a clump of fine grinds at the top of the cup. Fortunately, these fine grinds are packed together into a clump at the top, so you can remove it easily if you're careful. But it's an extra step, plus a waste of beans.

2) The cup measurements on the grinder (2 through 12) are not very accurate, though they are precise. In other words, they don't correspond to real coffee cups, but they are repeatable. So once you figure out what setting works for you, the grinder is predictable and reliable.

I went to the trouble of measuring the grinder's output at various settings. Hope this helps someone.

Setting 2: 4 rounded Tbsp
Setting 3: 5 rounded Tbsp
Setting 4: 7 rounded Tbsp
Setting 5: 8-9 rounded Tbsp
Setting 6: 10 rounded Tbsp
Setting 7: 12 rounded Tbsp
Setting 8: 14 rounded Tbsp
Setting 9: 16 rounded Tbsp
Setting 10: 17-18 rounded Tbsp
Setting 11: 18-19 rounded Tbsp
Setting 12: 20 rounded Tbsp

(The knob clicks as you turn it, but it doesn't click exactly to the numbers on the dial. So there's a guessing game in that regard as well.)

Too many problems for the price

I bought this grinder last year to replace my $20 Mr.Coffee blade grinder (which actually lasted 2 years) and have been sorely disappointed. I have been having trouble with it since the very first use. I wish now that I had returned it then. Something as simple as grinding coffee in the morning has become a big, messy, chore for my busy mornings.

Cons

1. The sensory for the top and bottom compartments are too sensitive. Every morning I have to finagle the compartments to get the grinder to come on.
2. IT IS VERY VERY MESSY! The sliding bottom compartment ALWAYS spills grounds onto the counter when you pull it out. It is an awkward shape to transition the grounds to the coffee maker. It also produces statically charged grounds that get everyone. I always have to brush off my shirt and wipe down the counters and walls where it was used.
3. Has trouble working if you fill it with beans. I usually have to do small amounts of beans a couple of times, as it has a hard time working if over half way full of beans. So even though it has big compartments, they are just a waste of space as the grinder can't seem to handle it's full capacity.
4. The dial that sets the type of grind has never worked, instead it gives rather large and inconsistent grounds.
5. The grounds compartment is impossible to get clean. I have very small hands, and even I can't get in there to clean it. If you put it in the dishwasher, it still maintains an oily residue. The compartment is too deep and narrow for anything to properly clean it well.

The only real pro I can mention is that is still grinds the coffee. Although it grinds poorly, inconsistently, and with much fuss, it will still produce coffee grounds at the end of the day.

I think money would be better spent on a cheaper, usually more efficient blade grinder. In this case, cost is not a implication of quality!

Disappointed

This coffee grinder worked very well up until about 3 weeks ago, 2 years after we bought it. The on button on the front dislodged and so made the grinder inoperable! Will not buy it again.

Works well but not for long

I purchased this grinder on May 7 and by mid June, I'm having problems with it. The dial that regulates the amount of beans to grind does not work. It just keeps grinding until all of the beans are gone which totally defeats the purpose of having your own grinder. So I called Krups warranty center, and they happen to have a service center locally. They will get around to looking at it 7-10 days after they receive it. In respect to what others have said about static. I agree and LOTS of it. I purchased this machine for coffee grind but I can only imagine how it would be with a fine espresso grind. It's a very messy machine, if you don't mind having to clean the unit and the counter after each use then this won't be an issue for you. I can live with cleaning up after it but I'm really irritated that it has stopped working properly with light use as we only use it 3-4 times per week. In my opinion, a cheap rip-off, don't waste your money.

Great grinds

We love, love, love our Krups Burr Grinder. We received one five years ago and it was used at least three times a week, 50 weeks of the year. It outlived well beyond its warranty.

It's not submersible and the little, teeny, tiny brush they give you to clean your machine is worthless. We bought a good basting brush to clean the well, and always washed the removable parts. In return, we got custom grinding from coarse to powder fine for years. This machine is worthy of your sumatra, mocha java, arrabica, jamaica blue mountain beans.
