Worked great at first, then problems

I was really excited when I first purchased the Krups FMF5 Coffee Maker. I have gone through coffee machine after coffee machine over the past several years. Why? Because the glass carafes kept breaking and the coffee maker companies stopped making making replacement carafes. So I decided to get a stainless steel carafe and Krups had a solid name, so I bought it. I was very satisfied with this model for the first several months. Yes, there is a problem with bubbles in the Water Level Indicator, but I overlooked this flaw because I used a measuring cup to add my water. I found that the coffee in this machine did taste good, but it was not really hot. It was kind of luke warm. I overlooked this flaw as well.

Another annoyance is the mandatory de-calcification that you have to do every couple of months. It takes two to three full cycles to get the decalcification indicator to go away. You have to do this if you want to program your coffee to brew the next morning. I've found this to be really annoying.

Ok, so I've had the machine for about 4-5 months, and I've put up with the annoyances above. But today, something happened with the machine that I can't figure out. There is a low water level indicator that is supposed to display if you turn the machine on and you haven't added any water to it. It's a nice feature, but the problem is, today the indicator WILL NOT go away, even with a full container of water added to the reservoir. I'm stuck and I can't get the indicator to go away, even if I unplug it. I did some searching on the internet and I find that there is a problem with the safety fuse on the circuit board. Ok, I'm not an electrician and I don't want to have to start trying to replace electronic parts on a machine that I paid about $ 100 for. If I take it to a repair shop, they're sure to charge me the same amount (if not more) than what I paid for this thing.

So my advice to anyone who is looking at purchasing this model... DON'T. This model has a lot of bells and whistles, but it has a lot of issues including the fatal issue that I described above. Looks like it's time for me to get a new machine. Don't buy this model. I do, however, like the Stainless Steel Carafe and will look for a new model with that feature.

Save Your Money

We owned this coffee maker for about two years until the lid on the insulated carafe failed. Each day we liked it less. Shortly after purchase we were unable to make a full pot without brewed coffee spilling all over the counter making it a 9-cup machine. The glass level indicator entraps air and becomes completely useless. The brewed coffee is not hot enough to start with and the carafe loses heat rapidly. Whoever designed the carafe should be forced to use his design as penance. It is impossible to empty the carafe without completely inverting it. This makes for filling the machine and pouring the last cup of coffee a real challenge. The lever on the top of the carafe that you depress to pour coffee broke internally to the lid after about 18 months so you have to push on the middle of the lid to pour any coffee at all. Krups should be embarrassed to have brought this inferior product to market. Bottom line is save your money and a lot of aggravation by purchasing a different coffee maker.

water level meter not working properly

The water level meter does not work properly. When u put water in a bubble usually gets stuck in the measuring shoot; therefore, u can't determine how much water is in the water reservor.

Krups very poor coffee maker.

I thought most people were nit-picking, and being very critical of this coffee maker until I received one as a gift and got to try it out for myself.

In a few words... Stay away from ANY Krups coffee makers!! They once were a quality company that built fine coffee makers, but now all their machines are made in China, and include that famous Chinese build quality.

My FMF5 suffers all the defects all the other reviewers write about. The biggest one for me is the air bubble that forms in the water level window. If you want anything less than a full pot, there is no way of knowing how much water is in the machine because as soon as you start to pour the water, the bubble appears, and there is no way to get rid of it. I unplugged the unit so I wouldn't get shocked, and tried several messy filling techniques. None proved to prevent the bubble from forming, so I called Krups very nasty Customer Service Agent. She said this was not a defect but was aware of the problem. The only solution was to pour the water so it hits the back wall instead of the side wall. There are MUCH better brands out there than anything Krups makes. Buy one instead.

Worst product and customer service ever!

My wife is what i call somewhat of a "coffee snob" I did quite a bit of research before purchasing this product. Most of the reviews seemed positive. We spent more than we wanted but felt like we it would be worth it for good coffee. Initially we were quite happy with the product. It soon went down hill. At first just a little issue, bubbles in the water level indicator. No big deal. Soon after that we recieved an "empty water reservoir" error. We tried anything and everything suggested by the manufacturer to no avial. After jumping through tons of hoops Krups finally agreed to repair the machine. With shipping at MY EXPENSE mind you. We shipped it to a service center, waited 7+ week. When we recieved the machine back it became clear immediately that this was not our original machine. We only had this machine working for about 2 months. The machine that was returned to us was dirty, scratched and just nasty. we contacted the service center and they refused to assist and insisted that it was our machine. We then attempted to contact Krups but COULD NOT GET THROUGH TO CUSTOMER SERVICE AT THE NUMBER SPECIFIED. We called at various hours and they were closed every time. The recorded message refered to something about some June dates and training. What is that about. It was January when we called.... If you attempt to take another path in the call routing system they will not assist AT ALL. They insist that you call the number that nobody will answer. I will NEVER purchase ANY product from Krups ever again. I will tell everyone i know about my experience. How do companies stay in business. Stay away from Krups.
