It was a big disappointment after using the last one. This one did not make strong enough coffee, which we solved by either running the grind 1 1/2 times or adding less water, it clogged easily in the chute from the grinder to the basket, and the carafe was awful to pour out of. It came out at barely a trickle. My husband says it was to help slow life down a bit, because it seriously took some patience to get a cup. And forget about the last cup, it usually ended up on the counter because the carafe needed to tipped over so very far. Also, the beans would get stuck in the hopper and not trickle into the grinder. Once we got used to using this machine, it wasn't so bad as far as clean up and prep, but the other issues were causing real regret in buying it. I emailed the company to let them know I was not happy with my machine. They were very nice and apologetic that I had a defective pot and promptly sent a new one. I was impressed on the one hand with the fact that they so quickly took care of the problem but a tad miffed on the other because they had missed my point-the machine was a poor design of a good idea, not defective. But, after setting up the new pot (I decided, why not see if that really was the problem?)we are pleasantly surprised to see that all of our complaints, so far, have been addressed. In this new & improved edition, the carafe pours at a good clip (back to the rat race), the strength is perfect without tweaking it at all, and a new little part has been added to help with the clogging issue. I don't see a difference in the hopper, but we use strong, oily beans so I'm sure that is part of our problem. We just started using this, so I'm not sure if everything is now peachy, but so far so good. Now if I can just remember to pour the old coffee out before starting the new pot..! I thought people would like to know that a lot of the problems in the negative reviews have been, if not fixed, at least addressed and improved upon.Cool machine - terrible coffee! It would seem that Cuisinart has made a really cool machine that completely misses the point of having a quality coffee brewer. To spend this much $$$ on a coffee maker MY biggest concern is the flavor of the coffee. As with other reviews, I find the grinder to be the biggest problem. It creates really coarse chunks as well as a fine powder known as "chaff". This combined with a cup shaped filter cup (rather than a cone shaped) results in a weak yet bitter cup of coffee. The problem is not enough contact time between hot water and coffee grounds. Even on the strongest setting using less water only increases the bitterness with no added "body". Its too bad because its a cool machine with some nifty features and easy to operate controls. Cuisinart just needs to devote the same energy and research into what makes a quality cup of coffee. Oh well, its going back to Macy's as soon as the Capresso 465 I just ordered from Amazon arrives - hopefully tomorrow. We had the older model Capresso which made great coffee. It finally died so I bought the Cuisinart. Oops, I won't make that mistake again. Now I'm going to the coffee shop for decent cup of coffee!!! Cuisinart 12 cup thermal Grind and BrewI have been waiting to purchase this since it came out...I love the idea that you don't have to add beans every time you make coffee..It is an easier and quicker way to a GREAT cup of JOE..LOVE IT !!!!!!! Save your money on the grind and brew featureWe replaced our old Melita G&B that we had for years with this model. I was attracted to the bean storage that would hold several pots worth of beans and the stainless carafe. The machine worked like a charm with cleaning the grinder area every 4-5 days (after every 2nd storage bin emptied)for about a month or so and then the plugging began. We began cleaning every other night and it worked OK for about another month or two then the plugging began...so we started cleaning every day and it worked OK for another 3-4 months and now apparently something in the little trap that opens during the grinding has completely quit working because it plugs solid with every use and does not brew anything but lighter discolored water. We now use our counter top grinder and only use it as a brewer. When it was new it made great coffee with all the functions. It now makes great coffee if we grind it separately. The carafe is difficult to get the last cup of coffee or so out of but that is not a huge issue. It does pour slower but here again that is not a huge issue. I could live with all that if the grinder worked like it is supposed to. One other note is that while it makes pretty hot coffee (around 180 F)I prefer mine a little hotter, however my wife thinks it is fine as is, so that is a matter of personal taste. We have owned this machhine for about 10 months. I am a research geek when it comes to buying a product. I read a lot of the reviews on this product and figured others were just not willing to do the recommended weekly maintenance and went ahead and bought it thinking I would do better. I did the maintenance as described and then went above and beyond the prescribed maintenance but still wound up with a failed machine. I am currently trying to find the receipt and if I do I will try to get Cuisinart to replace the machine with the non binding 12 cup model. If not We will continue to use the machine as a brewer only unitl it dies and then purchase a different brand with brewing only. Bottom line...The machine is a very good if not quite great brewer (would be great with a little hotter brew temp and better pouring ability of the last 1-2 cups) but save your money on the grind and brew feature....take the difference in cost and purchase a decent burr grinder and grind separately. Buyer BewareI have had this coffee maker for about one year. It worked okay for the first nine months or so, excepting the fact that, as other reviewers have mentioned, the coffee is never hot enough. Occasionally, the grinder would clog up and I would clean it. It was an annoying, but manageable problem, although reason enough not to recommend the product to others. Now, however, the grinder continually clogs up. There is nothing worse than waking up, and pouring that first cup of coffee only to find that the coffee did not grind, and all I have is a cup of not quite hot water. I have to clean the coffee shoot and dig out the beans from the grinder on an almost daily basis. I called Cuisinart's customer service, and was told that the unit could not be repaired, and there was nothing they could do. The representative said all she could suggest was that I just keep on cleaning it, and try switching to another type of coffee bean. I asked to speak with a supervisor. She asked what type of coffee beans I used. I told her Starbucks. She said that Starbucks beans seemed to cause a problem with this unit because they were too dark and oily. I pointed out that I had been using the same beans all along, and had not had this degree of difficulty for the first nine months. Moreover, I suggested that if the coffee maker works with only certain types of coffee, Cuisinart has a duty to disclose that, and certainly, I would not have bought the unit had I known that! The reason Cuisinart refuses to repair the unit is that it cannot be repaired. Based on my experience and the other reviews I have read, it seems obvious that this product suffers from a design defect which is covered under the terms of the three-year warranty, and Cuisinart refuses to take responsibility for it. I cannot believe that Cuisinart continues to sell this product. This is the fourth Cuisinart grind and brew maker that I have owned, and I did not have these problems with the older units. Finally, the supervisor agreed to replace the unit with a new one of the exact same model for a charge of $10 plus the cost of shipping to return my coffee maker. But honestly I don't want another one.Product DescriptionCuisinart introduces a fully programmable coffeemaker with a burr grinder for superior coffee. Our special burr grinder grinds the coffee without influencing the integrity of the bean, so the true flavor maintained. The strength selector and the grind control functions fine-tune intensity and volume, and the thermal carafe seals in heat and freshness so the last cup is as good as the first. It's never been easier to make a great pot of coffee!Read more...
