It gets emptied when it gets full (about every 5 days). No odors, no flies, and with the biodegradable liners and the charcoal filters it's very easy to keep clean.I do wish it were a bit larger because sometimes it doesn't get emptied when it's full and we have to spill garbage over into a plastic container until the worm farm is ready to accept more garbage. So I'm ordering another one. I have no complaints of it being too heavy or too light, the handle has plastic protection so as not to scratch/bruise the stoneware. I have had other RSVP products and they were all excellent quality, so now I'm torn between another black stoneware pail or the RSVP stainless steel pail which is a bit larger.
